Routine check-ups have proven to be the best defense against diseases, injury, parasites like fleas & tapeworms and many other preventable problems. A health problem that is detected in its early stages has a much higher chance to be resolved. That is great news for your pet as a greater success is seen with less difficulty, but also helps our clients as the issue is less expensive to tackle in the early stages.

Whether it is your first time bringing in your furry friend or a returning visit, the veterinarian will perform a comprehensive overall health exam on pet during your first or annual visits. We encourage our clients to also discuss any specific issues they are currently noticing with their pet (diet, bathroom habits, activity level, etc.) and have the doctor examine, educate and when applicable, treat specific conditions.

Experts recommend that dogs & cats should be examined at least once a year. It is encouraged for senior pets to have more frequent exams (> ~7yr).

These thorough examinations are invaluable in prolonging your pets life and keeping your pet happy and feeling great.

During this visit, we also recommend:
  • Updating warranted vaccines

  • Twice yearly intestinal parasite screening

  • Flea/Tick/Heartworm prevention (heart worm screening in dogs)

  • Wellness lab panel (when indicated)

When Should I bring In My Pet To Be Seen?

While some events can be unforeseen, in general however, pets should be brought in once a year for a check-up (2 exams per year for pets over 7 years of age). At Greenwood Animal Hospital these annual check ups include a full physical exam, which will give the veterinarian to assess your pets health. In fact, annual check-ups are important to determine any concerning conditions and to prevent some of those unforeseen events and diseases. Our doctors will check the health of your pet from nose to tail, and you will be very happy you came to Greenwood Animal Hospital for service.

If your visit is more specific in nature, such as a sick pet, it is always best to have your pet treated sooner than later. Not only will it cost less money & time, but tackling most issues before they get worse will have much better prognosis. Ultimately this will benefit both you and your pet. If you are unsure if your pet needs to be seen by your veterinary care provider, we urge you to reach out to us and discuss your concerns. You may contact us by email, or telephone at your convenience.

What Do I Need To Bring For My Appointment?

It is always a good idea to bring in any medical history you have of your pet when you come to the clinic. You should start thinking about your pet's health throughout his or her life, including behavioral shifts, eating habits, bathroom routine, etc. Keeping this in the back of your mind prior to your visit to the vet, will allow you to be better prepared to let us know everything that you think will be important for your pet during their visit. BUT our doctors can still work with whatever information you have. Our goal is to work with you together as a team for the benefit of your pet.
